We have chosen the
name of our association in tribute to an emblematic figure in social
welfare :
NORMAN BETHUNE (1890-1939) :

Canadian doctor specialized in chest surgery. |

A great defender of social justice, he founded a free-clinic for the unemployed in Quebec in 1935. |
|

He fought against the fascists in Spain in 1936 and organized the first mobile blood transfusion unit in Madrid. |
|

In 1938 he fought alongside the Chinese against the Japanese invader and created the first mobile medical unit enabling soldiers to be operated on in the battlefield. |

He died in China in 1939 of blood poisoning – he could not be saved for lack of medicine. For many years the Chinese truly idolized Dr Norman Bethune and even until recently small school children learnt his achievements by heart. |

- On the screen his part was played by Canadian actor Donald Sutherland in a film about his life called “Bethune: Making of a Hero”. |
